<p> DIED. Ellen Garwood, 89, conservative benefactor and
anticommunist; in Austin, Texas. Garwood became nationally known
in 1989 when she testified before Congress on behalf of Oliver
North during the Iran-contra hearings. Her strong anticommunism
led her to donate more than $3 million to the National Endowment
for the Preservation of Liberty, a conservative fund that aided
the Nicaraguan contras.
