  16. anticommunist; in Austin, Texas. Garwood became nationally known
  17. in 1989 when she testified before Congress on behalf of Oliver
  18. North during the Iran-contra hearings. Her strong anticommunism
  19. led her to donate more than $3 million to the National Endowment
  20. for the Preservation of Liberty, a conservative fund that aided
  21. the Nicaraguan contras.
